Wetlands are the areas between the dry uplands and the open water. Wetlands filter pollutants from storm water runoff, provide habitat for a diverse array of wildlife, provide flood attenuation, and recharge aquifers. Wetlands are defined as "those areas that are inundated or saturated by surface or ground water at a frequency and duration sufficient to support, and that under normal circumstances do support, a prevalence of vegetation typically adapted for life in saturated soil conditions" and are regulated by various federal, state, and local government entities.
