Client Type: Consultant, Nonprofit, Government Description: Brownfield redevelopment project to turn abandoned fish meal factory into a campus for a public museum. Services: Stormwater management; wetland and creek restoration; shoreline stabilization; jurisdictional wetlands delineations; environmental permitting and regulatory coordination; site surveying; erosion control design; stakeholder interaction and education. Overview The North Carolina Maritime Museum is located in the historic district of Beaufort, North Carolina. The popularity of this museum has left a need for larger exhibit space and additional parking. A thirty seven acre abandoned menhaden fish factory along Gallants Channel in Beaufort was selected to provide exhibits and parking for some three hundred thousand annual visitors. Exhibits will include artifacts recovered from Blackbeard's pirate ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge. To facilitate the environmentally sound development of the site, BLUE: Land, Water, Infrastructure has been retained to provide topographic and bathymetric surveying and mapping as well as an environmental assessment (EA) and to obtain a Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) Major Permit. Background and Details BLUE: Land, Water, Infrastructure is working closely with
the Coastal Federation (through a federal grant) to create techniques for
enhancement and stabilization of eroding coastal marsh. We are also providing
a plan to restore a salt marsh which has been filled by dredge spoil. The
plan will be tied to a strong environmental education program administered
by the museum. The completed museum will truly be one of the prize gems
along North Carolina's colorful coastline. In the meantime, please visit
the current Maritime Museum in historic Beaufort, North Carolina.
